In 2005, 61% of children in the United States from birth through age six spent time in non-parental child care, 36% of those in center-based programs. [3]

The demand for drop-in child care, in particular, is on the rise. And the trend is expected to continue into the future. [4]

 

What are the reasons behind this growing demand? Industry experts believe that it is a result of four significant changes in American society that have occurred over the years.

1. Families are more likely to move where the jobs are, and therefore, are less likely to have relatives living nearby that can help with child care. [5] And, often being new in the area, they may not have a friend and neighbor network that can help.

2. Today’s grandparents live longer, healthier lives. They tend to stay in the workforce longer, travel more, and have fewer limitations on their activities. [6] No longer can grandparents be assumed to be “free” to watch the children.

3. Teenagers are so busy with their own activities that they have little time and less interest in babysitting.

4. Today’s parents would rather have their children participate in fun and/or learning activities with other children than spend the night watching TV with a babysitter. [7]
